RAMSEY GREIG & CO. LTD.
Pioneers in port agency services since 1934
With over 75 years in port agency services, Ramsey Greig was founded in 1934 by George Burton Ramsey and Robert Douglas Greig.
In the beginning, the two men worked for Cunard White Star Limited located at the Port of Québec on Dalhousie Street in a building adjacent to the piers and also acted as travel agents for European Travel Agency located on St-John Street just up the hill in the Old Québec area.
In 1934, the two men combined their knowledge and passion for ships and opened an office in the Old Québec area, giving it their names, Ramsey Greig & Co. Ltd. They diversified their product and offered services and assistance to ships’ captains and crew members of various nationalities calling in at the port of Quebec City. This was an essential service provided not only to cruise ships, but also to those hardworking seamen who spent more time at sea than on land on a somewhat less glamorous environment, the cargo ships.
Throughout the years, Ramsey Greig moved to different offices and finally relocated inside the Port of Québec facilities at Section 102 (Wolfe’s Cove), our present-day location. With a steady growth, Ramsey Greig was purchased by Logistec Corporation on March 12, 1970, a major stevedoring company located in Montréal and working in Eastern Canada ports as well as in some ports along the U.S. east coast. With a reputation of having the highest standards for port agency services within the marine industry, on January 1, 1997, Ramsey Greig merged with a sister company operating at the Port of Trois-Rivières named J. C. Malone Marine Agencies that was also purchased by Logistec Corporation in March 1970. On April 8, 2000, observing the professionalism of the Québec-based agency in constantly improving its agency services, Alcan Smelters and Chemicals Ltd (now Rio Tinto Alcan) based at Port Alfred, La Baie, in the Saguenay region, hired Ramsey Greig to supervise their house agency, Alcan Agency. On April 26th, 2009, in the pursuit of quality services, Rio Tinto Alcan has contracted our services to fully staff and administer their marine agency in Port Alfred. This decision marks a continuation of our dedicated services to Rio Tinto Alcan and our ongoing commitment to provide professional agency services.
The key to our success is attributed to a proactive attitude, experienced staff, flexibility and customer-orientation, meeting and often surpassing our customers’ requirements and expectations.
Well anchored in agency services for over 75 years, Ramsey Greig has developed an expertise in the handling of bulk carriers, cargo ships, tanker ships as well as cruise ships and mega yachts. With a team of experienced and professional agents and a group of selected subagents, we provide quality services to ships calling at any port along the St. Lawrence River, Great Lakes as well as ports in Eastern Canada, including Saint-Pierre & Miquelon (France). Feel free to contact us at any time and we will gladly answer any inquiries you may have.
